About the Bulgarian language -
Bulgarian is an Indo-European language, a member of the south branch of Slavic languages, along with Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian and Macedonian. The Bulgarian language is very closely related to Macedonian - in fact some linguists claim they are the same language.

Bulgarian is spoken by 90% of the population of Bulgaria. Bulgarian is the oldest written Slavic language. Historically it played a very important role in the development of the Slavic languages.

The Bulgarian language began to develop in the 9th century. The Cyrillic alphabet was created during this time by Sts. Cyril and Methodius (although some credit their disciple, St. Climent). The dialect of the Bulgarian tribes (Old Bulgarian) was used as the basis for this alphabet. Because of this, the language used in the middle ages for most official and ecclesiastical documents for Eastern Orthodox Slavs was Old Bulgarian.

Through the years there have been many changes. It was divided into Old Bulgarian (9th to 11th century), Middle Bulgarian (12th to 15th century) and Modern Bulgarian (16th century onwards). The present-day written language was standardized in the 19th century. Some structures and words still remain from the old language of the Bulgars, the central Asian people who moved into Bulgaria and adopted the Slavic language.

There are several innovations which set Bulgarian apart from all the other Slavic languages such as the development of a suffix definite article (probably taken from Albanian or inherited from the Bulgar language), the elimination of noun declension, the lack of verb infinitive and the development of the Proto-Slavic verb system. Also there are various verb forms which express retold, witnessed and doubtful action.
